Daily Prompt: Suddenly

This is gonna seem like a strange topic for this daily prompt, but it’s what came to mind. As I’ve mentioned before, I have a lot of stuff chronically wrong with me and I may have mentioned that the bipolar is what came first, but now that I think of it, it’s not. Nope. These stupid things came first:

Way back when I was just about 10 or so, my friends and I would totally just share our drinks. Drink from the same cup, the same bottle, the same straw, or the same can, whatever!  We shared our food, too, cookies, candy bars, chips, &c… It didn’t matter. We didn’t know, or care, about germs. We were kids. This, I think, is how I contracted the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) that causes cold sores. In fact, I’m almost positive since it was around that time I started breaking out in cold sores. And when I was a kid, the sores were much much worse. They would cover my entire mouth and often would go up my nose. It was pretty awful.

vicksContrary to popular belief, there is no cure for cold sores, as the above link suggests, it is a virus. One can “treat” them to mitigate their duration and symptoms, but they just have to run their course. AND! They never go away.  The virus lies dormant in the body for the duration of one’s lifetime. And the sores (or blisters if you prefer) will just appear suddenly, for no reason. Like this morning. Bam! cold sores on my lip. Grrr. >_< Generally, this means my body is under some kind of physical stress or something, but sometimes it’s just… random. And annoying. Because these bad boys hurt when they’re trying to break through the skin. My go-to home remedy for cold sores is Vicks VapoRub, by the way. I use it every time. I don’t remember where I got the idea, probably when I ran out of Campho-Phenique and didn’t want to go to the store to get some more, and thought to myself: I’m pretty sure that Vicks has camphor in it too. Why not use that? I mean, they smell the same, right? So I tried it. And it worked. I’ll still use Campho-Phenique if I remember to buy it, but I always have Vicks lying around, because I use it for a lot of things, some of which are listed in that handy little picture there. I have never tried to rub it on my feet to stop coughing… how does that even work? >_> Nor have I tried to use it to clear up a zit… that sounds counterintuitive. But I can attest that it does help minimize the pain and duration of cold sores. And it works well as a decongestant and sore muscle balm. At least for me. Your mileage may vary.

About-90-percent-ofSo anyway, that’s what came to mind with today’s prompt, because I had a cold sore pop up suddenly today. You, dear reader, might call them “fever blisters” or something else altogether. I use the terms interchangeably.  Whatever they’re called. They are annoying and painful.  Luckily, the last few times I’ve had an outbreak, the stupid things haven’t been as aggressive as some of the times in the past. When I was in college a few years back, I actually had to go to the doctor and get an antivirus medication because the outbreak was so bad. Like, it covered my entire upper lip and was crawling up my nose. Talk about painful! I blame finals. ^_^ Having said that, this is the second time I’ve had a cold sore break out in the past two months, so yeah… >_<

On a completely different note, this is the other thing that came to mind with the prompt. Betcha wish I’da stuck to this one, huh?

  1. Hey girl, cold sores are awful!! I’ve had a few. My dad had them bad, and I think I got them from him.
Have u ever had shingles?? 1000x any cold sores I’ve ever had!! And it was on the corner of my mouth, and my chin!! Talk about ugly!
I never thought of Vicks for the cold sores! Thanx!
Yeah, never did the feet for coughing either! 😉

    • I’ve heard of shingles, but haven’t had them (knock on wood). I don’t want them either! I have enough crap to deal with without shingles.

But, they say if you had chicken pox as a kid, you could get shingles, and my mom was one of those who sent us to a friend’s house to get chicken pox so we would ‘get it over with’. We’ll see.

  2. They always told us it can be treated the same way as herpes: get more lysine, avoid arginine. They even prescribed lysine powder for our cats when they have virus activity–worth a try, and pretty cheap and wholesome. Good luck with it.

    • I took L-lysine for a long time to keep the sores from coming out, but it’s not a cure. There is no *cure*. It’s just a treatment like everything else. I didn’t want to take L-lysine for the rest of my life just to not have cold sores. I mean, I can go years without an outbreak… You know?

      • I know it isn’t a cure, but helps keep the circumstances in balance, so to speak. Maybe it would help reduce severity if taken when there’s an outbreak. Good luck with it.
