Anyone who knows me knows that I love to ask and answer questions. It’s been a while since I’ve asked (or answered) questions. These are some random questions in no particular order and that have no connection with each other other than that I have collected them from all over teh interwebs with the intent of answering them… someday. I guess today is that day. Ha! Normally, I’d post the unanswered questions first, then answer them, but this time around I think I’ll answer them first and then post a quick post with them unanswered in case anyone wants to answer them. So, without further ado, here are some random questions for your amusement. Enjoy!
Do you have a nickname? What do you prefer to be called? You know, I’ve never had a nickname — other than “crazy” ^_^. My birth name was not conducive to being shortened or lengthened, and Willow isn’t either — I do not look like a Will, thanks much. I mean, people have called me nuts and weird, but I don’t think those count as nicknames… more as mild insults. I prefer that people call me by my given name.
Do you have books on your shelf (ereader) that are begging to be read? I’ve read most of the books in my Kindle that I want to read. The books on my shelves too. I have one book waiting to be read, but it’s a non-fiction book about passive houses. It’s not going anywhere. I’m a fast reader. Even with a stack of books next to me, I can chew through them pretty quickly.
Are you a doodler? What do your doodles look like? I used to be. I doodled a lot in my books and on my notes. My favorite thing to doodle was 3D boxes or cubes. I drew them everywhere. I liked drawing them in different directions and drawing cubes inside of cubes and cubes on top of cubes, and I’d draw lines and intersecting lines. I liked drawing these types of cubes that are pictured here (not mine)… Are there two cubes side by side? or is there a small cube sitting in the corner of the big cube? It could be either one. It was fun drawing these. There was also a time when I drew fences (cubes and lines) all over the place. I still doodle once in a while, but nowadays it’s more fancy writing than cubes.
What do you do if you can’t sleep at night? I used to chant or sing quietly to myself. Now I do breathing exercises and it knocks me right out. I think it helps that I take meds that have a sedative effect. They won’t put me to sleep, but they help me stay asleep once I get there.
How many days could you think you would last in solitary confinement? You know, I’ve thought about this once or twice. I don’t know. I think it depends on whether or not I’m able to do anything whilst in there. I mean, if I have books to read or something knit, I could probably last quite a while. But if I’m just sitting there staring at the walls, I’d probably be sleeping a lot and wouldn’t last as long before I cracked.
Do you save old greeting cards and letters or do you toss them away? I save them, mostly because I don’t get many of them and they don’t take up much room. I have them tucked away. I don’t take and/or save pictures of special occasions as a general rule, but I do save letters and cards. I’m weird that way. I also like to put all of my Christmas cards, new and old, up on the wall at Christmas. It’s just a thing I do.
Who is the biggest pack rat you know? My husband. He keeps everything. And he does so for the same reason most packrats do… because you never know if/when you might need that thing again. For him, he’s certain that he’s going read that book again someday, or watch that movie or play that game. So he keeps them all. He’s getting a lot better at letting things go, but he’s the biggest packrat I know. Bless his heart.
Were/are you a good student? Define “good”. I got decent grades, and I did well on tests. I studied when I needed too but I wasn’t what you would call studious. I studied just as much as I needed to in order to pass my exams and get the grades I needed to get ahead, but not one iota more. I often finished my homework hours, sometimes minutes, before it was due — but I did finish it. In college, I had a 3.75 GPA, but honestly I skated through college because I took a major that was incredibly easy for me. I mean come on, read books, then write papers about the books I read? Please. I could do that in my sleep. The only reason I didn’t have a 4.0 in college is because of the mandatory science and math courses.
How often do you look at yourself in the mirror? Only when I have to. It’s not that I have a problem with how I look. I just have difficulties with mirrors in general. A slight phobia that I’ll look into the mirror and see someone standing behind me.
What is the strangest thing you believed as a child? I believed a lot of strange things as a child. I guess the weirdest thing I believed was that there was someone in my closet, and so long as the closet door was completely closed or open, I was fine. I only freaked out if the door was partially open.
Do you regift items that have been given to you? I totally regift things. I will more than likely try to use a gift as best I can for as long as I can, but if I don’t have a use for something, then it’s gone. I think it’s strange that some people seem to think that they have a claim to a gift even after it’s been given, but that’s simply not true. Once something has been given to me, it’s mine to do with as I wish. I feel the same way about things I’ve given to other people. If someone wants to give away (or even sell) something I’ve given them, more power to them.
Do you know the difference between a crocodile and an alligator? I know I don’t want to go near either of them. I totally know the difference, though only in general. Alligators are found in the Americas (and China, I think) and crocodiles are found in Australia and other places… like, the Amazon? I think. Crocodiles are larger than alligators by a good bit, and I believe that alligators like swamps while crocodiles like more salty areas. That’s all I can remember. Also and alligator will see you “later” while a crocodile will see you “after a while” Ha!
Do you still read the newspaper? Not in many, many years. Though I will occasionally read an article to a random newspaper online if one is linked to something I’ve stumbled upon while browsing the internet.
Are there any animals that frighten you? There are many animals that frighten me. And they’re meant to be frightening. We have elk that wander our neighborhood, and while elk aren’t predators, nor are they “dangerous”, they shouldn’t be messed with — especially in mating season. Those things are huge! There are also bear that live in this part of the woods. Luckily, I haven’t actually seen any bear, only their scat in my driveway and around the property. I’ve only had one run-in with a bear and that was a long time ago, in North Carolina. That’s as close as I want to get to a bear. We also have coyote running around here. If I were walking outside and ran into any of these animals, it would be a scary experience.
Are you a collector of something? If so, what do you collect? Let’s see. I collect pencils. I’m not sure exactly why I collect pencils. I just do. I have two wooden cigar boxes full of pencils. I can’t even pinpoint when I started collecting pencils, but I did. They don’t even have to be good pencils. They just have to be wooden pencils with lead. And an eraser. Can’t have a pencil without an eraser.
I also have quite a large yarn collection. But I think that comes with being a crafter. I’m currently working through my yarn stash as we speak. I was in the crafting room the other day looking at my stash and I realized that I don’t even like half of the yarn I have. I also don’t remember where I go most of it. It’s like it multiplied or something. Why do we hoard yarn? It’s so weird. I have this urge to just give it all away, and this strange compulsion not to. It’s so… frustrating.
What is something about yourself that you hope will change, but probably never will? I’ve mentioned this before, but I am, at my very core, a lazy person. I call myself a lazy person with a good work ethic. Which means that if there’s a job to be done, I’ll do it, but I’ll find the easiest, most efficient way to do it as possible. Even if that means bending the rules to get it done. That’s right, I’m a cheater. I figure so long as no one is being hurt by my cheating, and no laws are being broken, I’m gonna cheat. Bite me. I get this crazy impulse every once in a while to be less lazy and more productive — but that’s simply not gonna happen. We can’t all be goal oriented people. Some of us just have to abide.
What’s a strange occurrence you’ve experienced but no one believes you? Man, so many weird things have happened to me, it’s difficult to pick just one. Usually someone, somewhere believes me when I tell them the strange stuff that goes on in my life, because I tend to gravitate towards like minded people. I don’t surround myself with like-minded people because how dull would that be? But I do have enough people around who think like me that I’m rarely not believed.
However, having said all of that, there are things that mundanely happen to me that people still have trouble wrapping their minds around. Like me being exhausted all of the time. And just this past few weeks, I’ve been getting brain zaps from out of the blue. I fucking hate brain zaps. Try explaining them to people though, and not only will they have trouble understanding what I’m saying, they often have trouble believing they’re even real. Because here’s the strange part… brain zaps are generally caused by medication and medication withdrawal. Well, I haven’t stopped taking any meds, but I’m still getting brain zaps. >_<
What’s something that amazes you? This whole world amazes me. And I’m dead serious about that. If you understand evolution, dear reader, then it’s amazing how it works. I mean, just think about how we’re born. We – you, me, that person over there — we all came from two cells that merged together and formed a life. That’s pretty fucking amazing if you ask me. And if one thing had changed before those two cells came together, then I would not be me and you, dear reader, would not be you. Not the you that you are right now. It all had to happen in a certain way for that one sperm to reach the egg when it did and impregnate it with the exact genetic DNA that particular sperm had. That’s amazing. Looking outward, this planet we live on was once a bunch of lifeless hunks of metal floating in space and they came together to form the Earth. Yeah, it took a long time, but it still happened. And this Earth as we know it will be here long after I’m gone. And it will eventually become hunks of metal in space again — and that is also amazing. It’s all amazing. And what’s the most amazing is how much of it all we simply take for granted.
Do you prefer the blunt truth or would you rather people or temper their words? Word tempering leads to lying. Lying with good intentions to be sure. But I’d rather people be blunt with me.
What’s one thing you’d rather pay someone to do than do yourself? As my body gets more and more frail and broken, I have to pay people to do things I was once able to do. Things like fix the sink or change the oil in my car. I’d rather do those things myself, but necessity forces me to pay others to do them. I’m a complete control freak and have a slight problem with letting things get out of my hands. It’s not that I don’t trust the professionals to be able to do their jobs… it’s just that I don’t trust the professionals to do their jobs.
I mean, we paid a pretty penny to have a fence put in (something I totally could have had friends come over and do myself not even six years ago) and the damn thing started falling apart in less than a month. It looks like it has been up for over ten years rather than the two it’s been up. The contractor blamed the materials, he blamed the ground, he blamed his subcontractor, everything but himself. He was going to charge us over $2K to “fix” what he did. Can you freaking believe that? So, yeah, I’d rather do things myself if I can. I know there’s a lot I cannot do, but if I can… I’d rather.
What are the qualities that tend to draw you to someone new? Honesty. I know it’s not something one can tell right off the bat, but if I find out someone has been dishonest with me… grrr. I guess friendliness. I mean, that’s how you meet people, right? By being friendly with them. I remember when I was dating I hated being on dates with men who were pompous and rude. I got up and walked out on dates who were rude to the waitstaff, and I honestly didn’t care where we were. I mean, fuck that noise. I cannot abide rudeness, and there’s no reason to treat the waitstaff like they’re servants in an old movie. No one is better than anyone else. I don’t give a flying fig how much money one makes or what kind of car one drives. What matters most is how you treat the people around you. IMHO
If you had to change your first name, what would you change it to? Willow. Because that’s what I changed it to. ^_^ I wrote a blog post about it on my old blog. You can read it here.
Do you believe ignorance is bliss? Why or why not? I believe I wrote a blog post about that too. You can totally read that here. Man, I’m sending people all over the place today, huh? The short answer is, yeah. I totally believe that. The why or why not is answered in the linked blog post.
What (if anything) do you consider unforgivable? I don’t think there is anything in this world that is unforgivable. However, having said that, I also believe it is up to the person doing the forgiving to make that decision. Because forgiving someone isn’t about absolving them of their sins, it’s about making peace with yourself and moving on with your life. I live in the now. The past is the past. I’ve had a lot of people do some pretty shitty things to me in my past. I could wallow in the past and say that what they did was unforgivable, or I could put it behind me and life in this day that I have. I live by the creed “Forgive but don’t forget.” I may forgive my psycho ex for being psychotic, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to be friends with him, or even go within shooting distance of him (he has guns, not me). I’m not stupid after all.
Do you ever break out into song just because you feel like singing? All the time. I have a mediocre singing voice, but that doesn’t stop me from singing at all. I used to love watching musicals… Broadway musicals, old movies that were musicals, plays that never made it Broadway… I just liked stories with songs in them. ^_^ I should start watching them again someday I suppose. I kinda lost the habit of watching anything over the last few years. Anyway, I have quite a repertoire of songs. Not just from musicals, but commercials, radio, and just… all over I guess. I also lost the habit of bursting out into song when my lungs went, but it seems to have resurfaced, much the dogs’ surprise and chagrin. Ha!
And there you go. 25 random questions. If I remember to, I’ll post them without the answers in a separate post. Maybe y’all will feel like answering them. I can’t be the only question person out there. Hope y’all enjoyed reading my answers as much as I enjoyed writing them.
